Building resilience in agriculture: lessons from Tanzanian cotton

The regenerative agriculture movement is gaining momentum as a strategy to build resilience against climate change, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss. Gatsby has focused on these issues since 2009 in Tanzania’s Lake Zone, using conservation agriculture and last-mile distribution.

Our approach promotes sustainable intensification to address low yields and resilience, as small growers in East Africa face low productivity and incomes due to limited investment in inputs and services. Environmental, food, and nutritional security remain challenging, with moderate droughts occurring every 3-4 years and major ones every decade. Climate forecasts predict shifting rainfall patterns, requiring tailored, evidence-based practices to enhance resilience and productivity.
