Unlocking the Potential of East Africa’s Aquaculture Sector

This short case study charts Gatsby Africa’s journey to supporting the transformation of East Africa’s aquaculture sector. Initially uncompetitive and dominated by imported fish, the sector faced challenges such as low profitability and lack of investment in high-quality fish feed. Gatsby helped to catalyse sector take-off by providing early-stage debt to entrepreneurs exploring large-scale fish production. An aquaculture operator demonstrating success at scale helped to stimulate further investment and drive competition in the fish feed market. By supporting SMEs, improving farm management practices, and collaborating with governments on regulation and spatial planning, Gatsby has helped to lay the groundwork for a more competitive, resilient and inclusive aquaculture industry in the region.
