Market and Economic Feasibility of Granulated Lime in Kenya

Approximately 13 per cent of Kenya’s agricultural land (about 7.5 million hectares) is affected by soil acidity. Acidity presents a significant constraint towards the country’s efforts to maximise productivity and achieve food and nutritional security. However, soil acidity can be corrected through the application of agricultural lime.
Agricultural lime can be applied in many forms, with powder (ground) lime being the most common in many countries, including Kenya. Granulated lime is seen as a preferable option to powdered lime because of its granules’ cohesiveness, ease of packaging and transportation, and non-dustiness, as it addresses difficulties related to bulkiness, dustiness, and difficulty in application.
This report comprises findings of a study conducted by Kenya Markets Trust (KMT) in 2020. The study titled ‘Market and Economic Feasibility of Granulated Lime in Kenya’, sought to assess the Kenyan granulated lime market and its economic viability by estimating the supply, demand, costs, and returns/benefits at the critical value chain nodes including at the farm level, distribution level and manufacturing level.
